Xcalia™ Contributes Jalisto as Open Source to ObjectWeb
Provides lightweight database solution for transactional Java
applications
Paris, France — September 25, 2005 — Xcalia, a leading provider
of business integration software, today announced that it has made its lightweight Java
database, Xcalia Jalisto™, available as Open Source. Jalisto is transactional, has a
very small footprint and provides high performance. It is 100% pure Java and
object-oriented. The project will be hosted by ObjectWeb (www.objectweb.org),
an
established and respected open source community with a focus on the development
of industry-grade distributed middleware.
Jalisto comes in two versions: Jalisto SE (Standard Edition) and Jalisto ME (Micro
Edition). Jalisto SE is an ideal solution for embedded and stand-alone systems.
Jalisto ME, which will be available in Q4, targets mobile environments including cell
phones, PDAs, and is compatible with the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME).
As Carl Olofson, research director at IDC, reported recently: "Object-oriented DBMSs
could well enjoy a second growth period as embedded DBMSs due to the efficient
and flexible data management they offer object-oriented applications, and open
source DBMSs are also attractive as embedded DBMSs because of the technological
control they offer ISVs as well as flexibility in licensing."
"As a member of ObjectWeb since 2001, and an active participant in the open
standards community, we share the same goal for improving solutions for large enterprise customers said
Eric Samson, Chief Technology Officer for Xcalia. Jalisto
has helped Xcalia's customers build enterprise solutions faster and we are pleased to
make it available for further open source development. In addition, we recently
selected Jonas application server and JORAM message-oriented-middleware as
packaged components of our new platform for data and service intermediation and
have additional plans to expand our joint offerings for unified open source solutions."
Embedded and mobile computing is definitely a hot topic today. In this context,
developers and users need lightweight solutions for persistence," said Christophe
Ney, ObjectWeb's executive director. We expect Jalisto to bring the benefits of
transactional storage without having to use traditional heavyweight commercial SQL
client/server databases. It nicely complements our roster of open-source
components for persistence that includes, for instance, JORM an adaptable
persistence service for Java Object Repository Mapping and MEDOR a Middleware
Enabling Distributed Object Requests".
Jalisto SE offers developers a flexible object database for lightweight applications
and is well suited for embedded environments. Key functionality includes an
optional Java query engine, caches, high performance and an interchangeable disk
access layer and local storage for complex object structures. It replaces the need
for serialization and can be used to replicate part of the data from central systems
to a local standalone client. Jalisto SE features easy JMX (Java Management
Extension) administration and support for record-level pessimistic and optimistic
locking. It can be deployed for single or multi-users in standalone for optimal
performance and a client/server mode is also available. It is compliant with Java
Connector Architecture (JCA) to ease the integration with Application Servers.
About Xcalia
Xcalia simplifies SOA implementation with agile business intermediation software
that combines heterogeneous data with services to develop and deploy transactional
composite applications. Xcalia's Intermediation Platform features a single, reusable,
virtual repository that integrates legacy and mainframe data with new or existing
services to provide consistent access and dynamic updates at application runtime.
Enterprises can quickly respond to changing business requirements by configuring,
not coding, applications from existing resources and reduce the costs associated with data access and
service integration. Xcalia, founded in 2000, is headquartered in
Paris, France and has offices in the US, UK, and Germany. The company is privately
held. For more on Xcalia, visit www.xcalia.com.
About ObjectWeb
Founded in 2002 by Bull, France Telecom and INRIA, ObjectWeb is a consortium of
leading companies and research organizations from around the world that have
joined forces to produce next generation of Open Source Middleware. ObjectWeb's
goal is to provide real-time enterprises with independent solutions which combine
quality and robustness at the best possible performance/cost ratio. ObjectWeb
targets alternative solutions to proprietary products for e-business, business
integration, data connectivity, grid computing, and enterprise messaging. Based on
Open Standards, ObjectWeb's middleware includes application servers, components,
frameworks and tools and feature JOnAS - an Open Source certified implementation
of the J2EE specification, JORAM - a Message Oriented Middleware and Enhydra - a
Java/XML Application Server. www.objectweb.org
Xcalia, the Xcalia logo, and the Xcalia Intermediation platform are all registered trades of Xcalia.
